Term:                         Definition:

Sedimentary Rocks        Rock formed from hardened deposits of sediment.
Bedding                       Soil
Bedding Plane               Boundary between two sedimentary rock layers.
Delta                           Fan-shaped deposit of sediments at the mouth of a stream
Deposition                    Sediment falls to the bottom of a body of water
Ripple Marks                 Small waves formed in rocks
Sediment                     Fragments that result from the breaking of rocks, minerals, and organic matter
Mechanical Weathering   Process that changes the physical form of rocks

Humus                         Dark, organic material formed from the decayed remains of plants and animals
Leaching                      Process in which water carries dissolved minerals to lower layers of rock
Soil                             Different particles that make up the crust
Soil Horizon                  Layers of a soil profile
A-Horizon                     Topsoil
B-Horizon                     Minerals located from topsoil, clay, and sometimes, humus
C-Horizon                     Bedding rock that has been partially weathered
Weathering                   Change in the physical form or chemical composition of rock materials exposed at the earth’s surface.

Creep                          Slow downhill movement of weathered rock material
Debris                          Particles broken apart
Mass Wasting                Large amount of sediments that are eroded down or collected in a certain area
Landslide                      Sudden movement of loose rock and soil down a slope
Rock Fall                      Fall of rock from a steep cliff
Slump                          Downhill movement of a large block of soil under the influence of gravity
Talus                           Pile of rock fragments that accumulates at the base of a slope

Beaches                       Deposit of rock fragments along an ocean shore or a lakefront
Coasts                         Where land meets water
Erosion                        Process by which the products of weathering are transported
Longshore Current         Wave motion down a coastline
Longshore Drift             Process of sediments moving along with the current
Wave                          Periodic up-and-down movement of water
Wave Base                   Bottom of a wave
Wave Refraction            Break wall that prevents erosion
